HARRISBURG, Pa. — A bill to outlaw the use of "false or secret" compartments in motor vehicles for criminal activity is on its way to the Pennsylvania Senate.

The House approved the bill Monday, 114-83, after a debate in which opponents said the legislation is unnecessary and could lead to unreasonable police searches of innocent motorists.

Rep. Kate Harper, the bill's sponsor, argued the measure would provide another tool for police trying to stop illegal trafficking of drugs, money, guns and even human beings. The Montgomery County Republican's bill covers any enclosure that modifies the manufacturer's original specifications.

Rep. Brandon Neuman led the opposition. The Washington County Democrat suggested the bill could open the door to police searches of after-market saddle bags on a motorcycle.
